Carlo Crivelli, Saints Anthony Abbot and Lucy

Circa 1470
Tempera on panel
Czartoryski Museum, Cracow

It was in the 15th century, especially the latter half, that the eyes on a golden plate started to edge out the flaming lamp as St. Lucy's primary attribute. As usual, her hair is blonde, her garb is elegant, and she holds the palm branch that signifies martyrdom.

The bell is one of the many attributes used in portraits of St. Anthony Abbot. He often also carries a staff, but the head carved into its top is quite unusual.
